The Use of Tarps after a Hurricane
After the hurricanes hit in the Gulf Coast tarps became a symbol of the damage done in Louisiana and Mississippi. Tarps have a wide variety of post-hurricane uses. Tarps can be used to cover damage in roofs or walls until repairs can be made. They can also be used to cover valuables to protect them from further damage. Tarps can also be used as a make-shift shelter or tent in the extreme case that a house is left unliveable and if no other shelter is available.
The most common kind of tarp seen after a hurricane is the blue poly tarp. Poly tarps are made of polyethylene, nylon tarp threading in the material and a rope reinforcement around the perimeter of the poly tarp material. These tarps have a weather resistant polyethylene coating and come in several cut sizes. They are made with a type of plastic material and are very durable and waterproof. They also have a UV treated coat to provide protection from UV rays.
The most common use of these types of tarps after a hurricane is for roof coverings. Hurricanes have been known to rip pieaces of a roof completely off, or tear off massive amounts of shingles. A tarp covering will protect your house from leaks caused by rain and other weather elements hitting on the parts of the roof that need repair. It may seem like a lot of hassle for even a little spot, but in the long run, it will save you a lot of time and money. The easiest way to get your roof covered is to tie lengths of rope along one side of the tarp. The ropes should be long enough to be tossed over the roof and reach the ground on the other side of the house from the side of the damaged area. After this is done, tie the lengths along the side of the tarp on the side of the house with the damaged area securely. After making sure it is all tied securely, pull ( you may need help) from the other side to raise the tarp up onto the roof and over the damaged area. If you do not have help, tie the lengths around sections of 2x4 to make the job go faster for you.
